Bernd van der Veen
Bernd holds a bachelor degree Bioinformatics from the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen. For his graduation project he ventured to University College Cork in Ireland to develop a pipeline which facilitated in the automated clustering, annotation and functional analysis of isolated genomes as well as metagenomes.
After working on several smaller projects in the academic and clinical arena’s, he decided to focus on software development. At the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam he developed a LIMS system allowing the Next Generation Sequencing facility to fully administer the wide variety of sequencing requests done by researchers in the institute.
Today he feels most comfortable with writing applications with a JAVA based backend supported by the flexible yet powerful MongoDB document stores or the somewhat more rigid SQL-spiced flavours. If you ask Bernd about the front-end of applications then he would say that these are just as important in delivering a sound user experience for data management interactions.
