OBiBa is an international software development project committed to building a full suite of open source software for biobanks. The software can be customized and integrated to support different biobanking activities, and at The Hyve we are currently working on customizing the Mica and Opal modules to provide a global samples catalogue view of all samples available in five separate biobanks.
The strength of the Mica and Opal combination is that they are well integrated and allow for a federated system, with a central Mica and distributed Opal instances, allowing the data to reside at the hospitals and thus removing the need for patient sensitive data leaving the hospital network. The figure below, with an overview of the federated system, where Mica serves as the “Analysis computer” and the Opal instances as the “Data computers”, illustrates this concept.
