Collaborative Pre-Print: New JITAI Algorithm for Real-Time Detection of Daily-Life Stress

We are excited to announce the release of a new pre-print detailing our innovative work within the DynaMORE project, which aims to address the global burden of stress-related disorders. This comprehensive study introduces a novel Just-In-Time Adaptive Intervention (JITAI) algorithm that leverages real-time psychological and physiological data to provide timely support during moments of heightened stress.

Understanding the Challenge of Stress

Stress-related disorders, such as anxiety and depression, continue to affect millions worldwide. Despite various treatments available, a significant treatment gap persists, highlighting the urgent need for effective preventive measures. This research shifts the paradigm towards resilience, emphasizing proactive strategies that empower individuals to maintain mental health and well-being amidst adversity.

The JITAI Algorithm: A Breakthrough in Real-Time Interventions

The JITAI algorithm integrated ecological momentary assessments (EMA) and ecological physiological assessments (EPA) to create a combined stress score. This advanced framework enables personalized intervention triggering based on individualized stress thresholds. In a multicenter study involving 215 participants, our findings reveal that the JITAI algorithm successfully processed data to initiate an average of 1.61 interventions per day, demonstrating its efficacy in real-world stress management.

Key Insights and Future Implications

This feasibility study showcases the robust performance of the JITAI Algorithm, achieving a compliance rate of 43% for EMA questionnaires. Participants provided enthusiastic feedback on the user experience, highlighting the potential for enhanced integration of interventions into daily life. By ensuring consistent support—even during moderate stress periods—this approach fosters routine engagement, leading to sustainable long-term benefits.
