Uncovering the Potential of Semantic Modeling and Knowledge Graphs: Insights from The Hyve's Drug Safety Webinars

On October 10th 2023, The Hyve hosted the first session of the webinar series focused on Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs with application to drug safety monitoring.

For the first session, our guest speaker Dr Tiffany Callahan from IBM Research Almaden gave a presentation that highlighted the powerful potential of ontologizing routinely collected healthcare data and linking it to biological evidence.

The focus of the presentation was on two novel methods. First, an algorithm that translates clinical concepts from patient medical records mapped to the OMOP Common Data Model into entities within commonly used biomedical ontologies. Next, a semantic ecosystem designed to standardize knowledge and facilitate large-scale integration of diverse datasets. These tools have the capacity to significantly improve the identification and explanation of adverse drug events, opening up future opportunities and applications in the domains of system pharmacology and pharmacovigilance.

After Tiffany’s insightful presentation, the stage was set for a dynamic discussion featuring Sofia Bazakou from The Hyve's Real World Data team and Elpida Kontsioti from The Hyve’s Research Data Management team. Together, they delved into the opportunities of Semantic Web technologies and their transformative potential for drug safety monitoring. They also uncovered the opportunities of synergizing the OHDSI community’s initiatives driving real-world data integration and sharing with novel methods leveraging biomedical ontologies.

The Hyve is also gearing up for its next webinar on November 14th 2023. This session will explore how knowledge graphs can revolutionize the analysis of multiple data sources in pharma R&D, offering practical insights and opportunities for the field of pharmacovigilance. You can find more information and register here.

Here's a glimpse of the topics that will be covered in the next webinar:

  • How knowledge graphs transform data management, enable FAIR data practices and change the way we tackle key scientific and medical questions.

  • The potential of knowledge graphs for downstream analytics applications in drug safety monitoring.

  • Practical tips for organizations considering knowledge graph solutions for multi-source data analysis in pharmacovigilance.

Stay tuned for more exciting insights and discussions as The Hyve continues to explore the potential of Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs.
