Data integration use case TraIT

The TraIT research infrastructure is developed by a Dutch public-private consortium that comprises a multidisciplinary group of parties — universities, academic medical centers, medical technology enterprises and chemical and pharmaceutical companies. The Hyve is an active member of this project. We provided support to more than 3000 of its users across multiple tools that facilitate collection, storage, analysis, archiving and securing of data generated in a wide range of disease area focused operational research projects.


TraIT started in October 2011 as an initiative from the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine (CTMM). CTMM TraIT was a €300M project which aimed to accelerate translational medicine by improving diagnosis. As an active member of the project The Hyve was involved in developing a long-lasting IT infrastructure for the Netherlands that facilitates the collection, storage, analysis, archiving and securing of the data generated in the CTMM’s twenty-one disease area focused operational research projects.


In the context of CTMM TraIT, we primarily worked on data integration, data harmonization and import of the multitude of datasets generated by the disease projects. For this purpose, we used open source tools such as tranSMART, i2b2, OpenClinica, BMIA, XNAT, Galaxy, Molgenis, Phenotype Database and cBioPortal. Data integration in this context means the integration of clinical, biobanking, imaging and experimental data into a single data sharing environment. The biobanking data component brings together data from several initiatives, including Strings of Pearl (Parelsnoer), Lifelines and BBMRI.


In this project, we faced with some key challenges including the authentication and authorization workflow to share data, ensuring data reproducibility, ensuring patient privacy (via i2b2 and tools such as CTP) and semantic data integration. This work was done in a multidisciplinary team with people from Philips Research, The Hyve and various academic hospitals (such as VUmc, UMC, ErasmusMC and UMCG), and led by The Hyve. The integration, normalization, and alignment of data in i2b2 and tranSMART permits users from the CTMM disease projects to explore and share data very efficiently to formulate new research strategies.


From January 2016 CTMM merged with TI Pharma to continue as Lygature and at the end of 2016 the TraIT foundation was formed to ensure the developed platform would persist for the future.
